Tibble Fork

Took the grandkids fishing for the evening. It was a fun trip, but the sunset was unusual. There was a normal sunset up in the canyon, nothing spectacular or unusual. It then got quite dark before the sky suddenly took on this rosy glow and for a while it got light enough to stay and continue fishing for a while longer. It cast a rosy hue on the ground and everything around. Interesting! Wildfire

Every summer we run the risk here in the western US of wildfires. It seems recently, that we get them more and more frequently right near the cities where we live. This plume of smoke appeared within just a very few minutes of this fire starting. Almost immediately, the fire consumed 500 acres, damaged two homes, consumed a barn, and quickly spread to 2,000 acres. This began from some construction equipment in the town of Alpine, and spread up Willow Canyon from there. Scary, but impressive display of what can go horribly wrong in a few moments when conditions are right. Fall is my favorite time of year! Too bad this only lasts for a brief two to three weeks here. The air is crisp and clean, nights are cool or cold, and days are warm and inviting in the sunshine and brisk in the shade. It always takes me back to my youth, fishing and hunting and camping with my father and brothers. I miss those times, but cherish those memories! Unlike the relatively monochrome nature of fall leaves in the Northeastern US, where there is not large variation in the species of trees, the mixed conifer/hardwood mountain valleys of the Rocky Mountains provide a myriad of colors in a single view. From the deep green of the conifers, the summer shades of green from deciduous trees that have not yet turned, to yellows, oranges and the deep red of the vine maples. Early Fall snow/rain storm settling over the Wasatch Mountains. Just before sundown, the sun peeked through and created this brilliant rainbow for just a few moments, before the clouds and darkness settled in. On most "normal" (OK, I know there is no such thing) years, the quaking aspen turn a uniform yellow color before losing all their leaves for the winter. This year was different. The shades of gold and yellow were exquisite. I have watched every year since and still have not seen anything like it.
